Revata Buddha (රේවත බුදුන්)

An early Buddha of the extended lineage, remembered for his noble renunciation and teachings of impermanence.

Biography (ජීවිත කථාව)

Birth and family

Revata was born in a great royal city. His father was King Varuna, and his mother was Queen Varunī. He belonged to the Kshatriya class.

Era and lifespan

Revata lived in a distant past kalpa. In his time, the average human lifespan was 84,000 years. His own lifespan was recorded as 84,000 years.

Renunciation and enlightenment

After seeing the four sights, Revata renounced worldly life. He attained enlightenment under the nāga tree, rediscovering the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

Teachings and disciples

His first sermon was delivered at a great park to his first disciples. His chief disciples were Soma and Uppala. His attendant monk was Varunadatta. His Sangha grew vast, with countless arahants attaining liberation.

Symbolic meaning (සංකේතමය අර්ථය)

Revata symbolizes the Dharma’s endurance across vast ages. His era reminds us that impermanence governs even long lifespans, and liberation remains possible for all who practice sincerely.
